First up, this was a great experience! Excellent set up of bikes, very accomodating of our needs, transport from our hotel was included as was a picnic and lunch at the conclusion of the ride. We were the only two riders that day, so essentially we had a private ride with a ride leader and support vehicle.
We had debated doing the MTB ride, but it poured with rain all night long a nd I was glad to not have to deal with the mud when we woke up day-of.
We both had carbon frame bikes. Mine was a very nice Cannondale with disc brakes, but my partner had a less nice bike with calipers. It was never a problem, though her bike did have some shifting problems and we had to stop twice to get her gears sorted out.
Coming from Dallas, I was a little concerned about the traffic on the road, but we were assured that cars are very respectful of cyclists. It took me about 15km to get comfortable with the single lane roads with a lot of cars, but the assertions about our safety were spot-on. Cars were very respectful and our support vehicle did a great job of creating a barrier for us. There were some occasions we had to ride single-file, but for the most part we were two abreast.
The ride itself was a decent challenge, more so because of the heat and humidity than anything else. Some of the climbs kicked up to some decent gradients around 14-15%, but they were never excessively long, so easy enough to just grind up the hill. Some great photo opportunities along the way.
One recommendation is they they incorporate a swim in the river at the end of the ride. We went back to the river after our lunch and swam for about 30 minutes. It made a massive difference to our recovery from the heat and just a really great way to finish off the whole experience.
I wouldn't say this was an 'epic biking adventure', but it was a great way to get a little closer to the locals, see Costa Rican life at a slightly slower pace than just going by in a car and probably seeing some parts you wouldn't ever see if you were just a tourist. Good cruise for a fit cyclist, and a good challenge for someone not in the best shape.... (Read more)
